This briefing and strategy call about the TRIPS patent waiver for COVID treatment, organized by GTC member Third World Network, galvanized members to demand that World Trade Organisation (WTO) member states adopt the proposed “Waiver from certain provisions of the TRIPS Agreement for the prevention, containment and treatment of COVID-19” (Waiver Proposal). Submitted by Eswatini, India, Kenya, and South Africa, it is currently being discussed at the TRIPS Council. The adoption of the Waiver Proposal is critical to ensuring access to COVID-19 medical products in the vast majority of WTO Member states, especially developing and least developed countries.
